Apparently Galtus had already told him that he was going to Nonwyll Caverns to look for gems, which clears us of suspicion. He must have wanted to cover up for himself so that he could take the bribe. Marlen Previa mentioned that he wouldn't give me Galtus' papers however, and even claims that violence won't scare him into handing them over.
