The history of Verona Bay is inextricably linked to the story of Kirin VanGarff and his bride Berunda. However, while their tragic tale is undoubtedly the most famous account from this picturesque part of Northwestern Rumare, Verona Bay has a long and interesting history prior to their story.

As far back as the First Era, there is documentary evidence of the Bay being used as a hunter's camp. The area is a rich source of Rumare Mud Crabs, and with its pleasant weather was often a stop-over spot for traveler's heading North or South. The bay is mentioned in the traditional song Hunter's Remedy

And lay my head by Verona Bay

According to records the first permanent residence established in the area was a woodcutter痴 cottage. This was probably located close to the site now occupied by the Gatehouse. Soon more cottages were built close to the lake, used by fisherman and seasonal hunters. It is possible an inn or tavern was also established.
Letters written around the time suggest a 'resting place'. but this might simply refer to the camps. The site continued to be a refuge both for travelers and at times an ideal hide out for highwaymen and bandits. Buildings came and went.

The oldest surviving building is the lakeside property now known as Rumare View. The house was commissioned, as a retirement home, by Blade Captain Carody Lania. Lania's career was distinguished by long service rather than great deeds. Around this time (early 3rd era) the bay had become an established stop-over camp. Blades moving from the Imperial City to the northern strongholds would frequently stay at the camp. Lania, who was by all accounts a fantastic teller of tales, would hold court at the camp telling outlandish stories to delighted audiences; tales
which would not have been considered good etiquette in the stuffy orthodox world of the Blades. It seemed natural that he would return to his favorite place in his retirement.

Lania's home became the focal point for traveling Blades who could always look forward to a warm welcome and a well stocked table at Rumare View. It soon gathered a reputation as the place to be if you enjoyed the company of a convivial host. Soon Imperial Guards began to join the Blades in using Rumare View as a guest house. The presence of so many soldiers added to the camps reputation as a safe haven for travelers. Inevitably, the presence of a near permanent camp led to the construction of an Inn to serve the community. This Inn originally called Blade Haven Tavern would later become The Verona Inn. With the modern regeneration of Verona Bay, the Inn became known as The Unruly Wife, named after the consort Thonica according to some, although the exact origin of the name remains a mystery. During regeneration, and a new Hotel was built in the Northern Plaza.

Following Lania's death, his property was bequeathed to a close friend Gerich Vitrix who like Lania was a former Blade. This began a long association between the Vitrix family and the area which continued until quite recently, when the Vitrix sisters Julietta and Antoinetta Marie left to seek their fortunes, although Julietta remains the official owner of the property and has been seen in the region quite recently.

The village continued to develop over the next century or so, with the addition of lakefront housing and the residence which now houses the Cup and Staff. The Northern Plaza was only added with the redevelopment.
However, with the expansion of the Imperial City and reduction of travelers heading north, the village seemed destined to stagnate. But two of modern Tamriel's greatest and most enigmatic characters were to change all that. I am speaking of course of Kirin VanGarff and Berunda.
