Like many of the empires children in these troubled times he spent his formative years hidden from view reading and dreaming of adventure. As soon as he was able, he joined the Fighters Guild, and rose quickly in its ranks. The guild recognized his brave and dynamic fighting style, and his natural leadership abilities. Then following ten years of loyal service he stopped taking guild contracts, although he remained a guild member to his dying days. Unsurprisingly, he continued to associate with active and former guild members throughout his life.

VanGarff began a lifelong quest to remove what he saw as the 'Brethren of the Night' from Tamriel. His particular dislike was for vampires. He was an obsessive dungeon delver who-as well as developing a fearsome reputation among the so-called 'Night Brethern' was amassing a huge fortune.
By his late thirties he was a warrior of some fame and even greater fortune, drifting from one region to another in search of the latest kill. In fact, although much of his reputation was based on his exploits as a solo adventurer, he was often the leader of parties of ex fighter's guild members in his dungeon raids. All that was to change when he met Berunda.

No character of modern folklore is shrouded in as much mystery as Berunda. We have no record of her full name, and no confirmed record of her birth. Berunda herself would tell conflicting and wildly unbelievable tales of her parentage. The only real certainty is that she was of mixed birth. She was certainly Half Elven, and in all likelihood half Redguard. Berunda would at times claim her mother was of Royal Elven birth and that she was caste out for her illicit affair with a Redguard captain. At other times her mother was a Redguard serving girl defiled by an evil Elven baron. It does appear that she was abandoned by her parents at a very early age.
Even the most bias of reports concedes that she was a real beauty. Dolcite, the merchant, in his letters from Anvil described seeing her dance in the square. "In one glance all the breath I had left me. If she had asked me I would have laid down my life for her".
It is clear that Berunda throughout her life had an odd relationship with Elven kind. She would deride and vilify the race and their culture, but would seek out and befriend Elves, particularly those who were trained in magic, wherever she alighted in her wandering.

And Berunda was a wanderer.
Good documentary evidence first places her, in her early teens, in Anvil, traveling as was often the case with an itinerant Elf mage. Further reports place her in Chorrol and there are reports of her traveling as far as Morrowind. She would never stay in one place for more than a few months. She earned her living in the early years as a dancer and singer. However, her real talent was for potion making. Despite never being formally trained, she was a genuine enchanter and potion maker of real skill. Her potions of Beguilement and Attraction were famed across the land. As soon as news spread that Berunda was in town, crowds would gather to buy her potions and to admire her beauty. She had a delightful singing voice and would often while away the hours singing Elven laments.

The legend has it that she only stopped at Verona Inn, due to a terrible storm. VanGarff forced off the road by the same storm was already sitting by the fire. Berunda entered, threw off her sopping cape and turned to see the veteran adventurer. They fell in love at first sight.
For the less romantically inclined, particularly those who took a dim view of Berunda, they are more apt to believe a different version of events. She did of course have a darker reputation. She was accused of trading her looks and body for coin. She was accused of being a home wrecker, a wanton and thief. Ultimately she would be accused of murder.
Many saw her as a fortune hunter. After all VanGarff was not her first husband. Her first husband died within two days of their marriage due to a mysterious illness. Of course many blamed Berunda for his death. He was not spectacularly rich, but his family was convinced Berunda was a gold digger, and never forgave her.
They supposedly paid for a curse to be placed on her. Berunda, according to her detractors, had set her sights on VanGarff as a comfortable meal ticket. Whichever story you believe, the couple was married within a week, in the old chapel. The chapel was subsequently rebuilt at Berunda's prompting. VanGarff instantly commissioned the building of Verona House.
During the five years it took to build they toured Cyradiil, often accompanied by Berunda's latest Elven teacher and Van Garff's Fighters Guild buddies. Again truth and legend blur as to exactly what they did on the grand tour. It is well documented that they would stay at local inns and tavern and hold lavish parties and feast. It is also clear that VanGarff continued to adventure and hunt vampires. Berunda it is said joined him on his quests, although the evidence is more anecdotal.
Finally they returned to Verona Bay to take up residence in the now completed Verona House. The arrival of the VanGarff's and their entourage gave the little community just the injection it needed , and soon new buildings began to spring up. The most notable being the new chapel which was paid for by VanGarff and the arrival of the Brandyworth's Store. The Brandyworth's were old fighter's Guild buddies of VanGarff. For ten years the couple seemed to live a blissfully happy life. Only one shadow lay across their union. They remained childless. By all accounts VanGarff was untroubled by his lack of an heir, but Berunda was at times beyond consolation. She turned, as always, to Elven scholars to help solve her problem and began, together with the local Templar family, who were noted alchemy scavengers to explore the neighboring area for plants and roots to experiment with. These foraging trips became more and more expansive as the years went on. Berunda also established an enviable Alchemy lab in the house and the adjoining mages facilities were rumored to rival any in the land.
VanGarff became concerned with these increasingly long foraging trips and insisted on employing Fighters Guild members to protect her. Berunda had over the years come to distrust the Fighters Guild. She never gave a reason for this but it has emerged that her first husbands family were all closely associated with and had high rank in the guild at that time. VanGarff hit on a neat solution to this.
Using his fortune and contacts he had Verona Bay officially recognized as a protectorate of the Imperial City, established a small city garrison, and built the Gatehouse as their barracks.. The guards could then accompany Berunda to protect her.

}}}
