There can be nobody in Cyrodiil who has not at least heard of necromancy.  Until banned by the mages guild recently its practice was commonplace.  Surely we have all seen ghosts, zombies and skeletons, the companions of these practitioners, carrying shopping, cleaning houses and generally slaving away on their master's behalf.
<p>
It is also known, although perhaps less widely experienced, that these creatures can exist in their own right and not as necromantic re-animations.  They are common in chapels and ruins.  Others are found in mines and caves.  A few may even be encountered in empty houses.
<p>
What is less widely appreciated is that these creatures are attracted to their own kind and so to necromancers as well.  But while a necromantic re-animation will be biddable and behave in the same way as the necromancer to any visitor, these 'wild' undead act on their own instincts.
<p>
And it has to be instinctive.  They have no functioning brain.  Indeed in the case of some zombies they have no functioning head.  You will know, if you ever summon these creatures yourself, that they are not naturally aggressive.  Of course they will not attack you the summoner as there is a causal link.  But neither do they attack peaceful onlookers.  Why then are these wild undead  without exception vicious?

Is it to do with their method of coming into being?  They are not re-animated.  That can only mean that they were never truly dead.  One can only imagine that they have been refused entry into - whatever world the dead inhabit - by the controllers of that world.  Was it their behaviour in life that caused the rejection?  Whatever the reason, the fact that they have been refused sanctuary must instil a fury unimaginable to human minds.  Unable to die and yet not alive they appear to seek nothing more than revenge.  And as they cannot be revenged upon the controllers of the world of the dead, they take it out on the living.

I work and live near the Roxey Inn.  I have seen many more of these creatures than I care to admit.  Our local caverns seems to be a point of attraction for both necromancers and the wild undead in equal proportions.  So I think I am qualified to say that when the dead walk, even if they appear to be peaceful, they are perpetually unhappy.  Nobody would want to risk ending up as one of them.  You should think about this carefully as it may well affect your behaviour in this life.  It will be too late to worry about it later.
