The Journal of Anselm Cosin
By Brellus Cosin
A History of the Battle of Fort Cereus

Authors Note: Being the last of the Cosin bloodline, I feel it is my duty to pass on the heroism, bravery, and valor of my ancestors. I wrote this book using only the journal of my great great grandfather and the stories, legends, and facts I have learned, and kept, over the years from my father and his father. My time in this world is almost at an end, for I am very old, but I cannot allow the people to forget what happened at Fort Cereus.
Incase you have never heard of the fort or the battle that was fought there, let me tell you a little bit about it. Fort Cereus was built in the forests and hills between Kvatch and Valenwood and served as a legion fort and outpost there for only 4 years (3E 263 3E 267). My great great grandfather was put in charge as a commander of the fort from 3E 263 3E 266, however he mysteriously died just 2 days after the Siege of Fort Cereus. A year after his death the legion decided to remove the fort from service, and it is now a home for many of the citizens, and decidants of those whole lived in near it before.
I found the journal of my great great grandfather one Middas, hidden away in an old chest in the ruined fort. After reading the journal, much had been made clear to me and I finally knew some of the things that happened during the battle. So it is with this knowledge that I have written this book based solely on fact. Brellus Cosin

18 Sun's Dusk 3E 266 Fort Cereus
When we heard the news that Mountain's Keep, a small village on the edge of the road about a mile from Fort Cereus, had been burned down by a group of marauders and goblin slaves, we sent many soldiers down to the fort to aid the many surviving citizens. Knowing the enemy may return and find our outpost, I ordered many of the soldiers who were not aiding the wounded to help build a wooden barricade around our structure. The structure was outfitted with long wooden spikes to attempt to dissuade a charge from the enemy.

In the eighteenth hour of the day, one of our scouts returned with news from Kvatch. The raiders that had burned the city were in fact the infamous Goblin Bandits who have been plauging the lands north of Kvatch for the past decade, and just moved south towards Valenwood. Some of the wounded townsfolk have told us that they got their name because they capture and train the goblins from nearby caves and use them as slaves and warriors.

We have finished sealing our gates and setting up our defenses, and are ready for a siege. My only fear is that our food supply will have run out before the battle even begins, however I trust that my men could fight well, even on an empty stomach.

19 Sun's Dusk 3E 266 Fort Cereus
The raiders have returned to the ruins of Mountain's Keep and are looting anything of value. I fear they know our fort is here and will launch an attack against it, yet I cannot be certain. I have sent archers and swordsmen down to the barricade to fire on anyone who approaches.

The Marauders finally launched an assault during the thirteenth hour. We have slain about 10 of their warriors and they have killed 3 of mine. The assault has stopped for now, but they could attack again at any moment. The healed citizens have been stationed on the walls as archers and support. One of our captains, a young man from Leyawiin, says he has a plan to defeat the enemy army. With very little food left, I can only hope that his plan works.

20 Sun's Dusk 3E 266 Fort Cereus
We have decided to try the plan of the young captain and told the soldiers our plan in the kitchen during our dinner. We are to attack at night when they are around their campfire and silently kill all of their goblins. Then our men will charge in and destroy them. Some of the residents of Mountain's Keep warned against it, saying that the bandits have ties to a secret guild of assassins, but whether or not it was true, I knew I had to destroy the bandits. When night falls we will ride out to meet them on the field of battle.

21 Sun's Dusk 3E 266 Fort Cereus
Our men were victorious! We have destroyed almost every last one of the Goblin Bandits and the townsfolk of county Kvatch are safe once more! There will be a great feast tonight and repairs to the village of Mountain's Keep will begin in the morning. Our men that have fallen in battle will be given proper burials in the Mountain's Keep cemetery. I have sent out my soldiers to gather what food and equipment they can from the enemy's camp and when they return, the feasting will begin!

22 Sun's Dusk 3E 266 Fort Cereus
The repairs of the small village of Mountain's Keep have begun with much of my men, myself included, willing to help out. The bandits have not been seen since their defeat, and I have finally gotten a good night's sleep. If the bandits ever do return, however, they should know that I will always be hunting them down.

Authors Note: This was the final page of the Journal of Anselm Cosin. Following this paragraph was a small stain of blood. This told me that Anselm was almost certainly killed in some way after the battle. Perhaps one of the last Goblin Bandits made their way into the fort, a legion soldier was unhappy with his share of the profit of war, or maybe something far more sinister was at work in Fort Cereus Nevertheless my great great grandfather will always be remembered as a hero in the county of Kvatch.
