Corruption in the Imperial Watch?
by Redara Alleius

es good readers, it seems even our illustrious Imperial Watch may not be beyond reproach. Rumors of a corrupt Watch Officer reached our office in the Imperial City Market District. While the Watch leadership could not be reached for comment, we did find several citizens willing to speak with us.

Luronk gro-Glurzog claims to have been 'shaken down' in one of the Market District shops by none other than Captain Audens Avidius. To be sure, Luronk is an Orc and there is always some animosity between Orcs and Imperials. This makes his testimony suspect on its own. He told us there was another witness, a Redguard who prefers to stay anonymous. We found him in his home in the Temple District of our fair city.

This Redguard corroborated Luronk's story but was strangely nervous while speaking to me. Setting aside the veracity of these 'witnesses', we decided to speak to some of the other Watch Captains. Itius Hayn, the Captain who is said to have arrested Avidius, declined to comment as well stating only: "Affairs of the Watch are not for public consumption, not that there is any affair to speak of. Nothing at all. We're fine. Everything's fine. This is a boring conversation anyway."

Rather than be dissuaded, we tracked down Hieronymus Lex in the Waterfront. After some searching, we found him in the Bloated Float attempting, so he said, to elicit information about the mysterious Gray Fox. I wondered how copious amounts of ale help an investigation but Lex only sneered when asked.

About Audens Avidius he said only this: "He's a sorry excuse for a Captain if you ask me. Lazy sod wouldn't even help with my search for the Gray Fox. Better off where he is now." When asked where he was, Lex only laughed and toasted me as he told me to bugger off.

The implication that Avidius had in fact been arrested took me to the Imperial Prison. While normally there is little problem gaining entry to speak to a prisoner, this day I was denied access. The desk sergeant actually told me they were 'taking care of a rat problem'. Rest assured, dear readers, there will soon be an article on the ineptitude of Imperial Prison desk officers. It does not pay to patronize the Black Horse Courier.

After further research and obvious, if gentle, brush offs from the shopkeepers in the Market District, we can neither confirm nor deny these allegations against Audens Avidius. We will instead, as always, stand behind the Office of the Imperial Watch as they protect us and the peace of our Imperial City from those who would disturb it, even from within.
