Breakthrough!
<br><br>
After years of dead end investigation, I have just stumbled upon what appears to be a major discovery that could once again set me on the path to finding Demon Bane. In Southern Books, while searching for any new arrivals that might aid my flailing endeavor, my eyes fell upon a slim volume that I had seen many times before ? a children's book, one of many in a series of scary stories supposedly based on true accounts.
<br><br>
I cannot say what prompted me to pull it from the shelf and open it, but my hand must have been guided by a higher power, for luck is rarely so deliberate.
<br><br>
The story told of a father and his young son hunting in the forest south of Skingrad. They made camp for the night at the sight of an old campfire ring somewhere near the waterfall that empties into the Stirid River. The sun was just setting when the father ignited some leaves to start a fire.
<br><br>
At this moment, the ghost of a large wolf appeared in the flames and inspected them with piercing eyes and promptly vanished. The father and son were stricken with fear, and despite it being dark and late, they ran all the way back to Skingrad.
<br><br>
By itself, this story is of no use. But it happens to bear a striking resemblance to a legend told to me by a scholar of history with whom I met many years ago.
<br><br>
This scholar quoted to me an ancient Ayleid poem regarding the supposed resting place of Demon Bane. The poem was heavy in its symbolism and lacked specifics with regard to location. But it included lines about how the entrance to this place would only appear when the sun was below the horizon, and how the "chosen," those born with the gift, were the only souls who could gain entry and set their hands on the great weapon.
<br><br>
Since I was a girl, I have known that I carried this gift, but kept it a secret by my father's warning that there were forces in the world that would harm me or worse if I was ever discovered.
<br><br>
But in addition, the ancient poem told that the warrior seeking Demon Bane, the "Demonhunter" it said, would ignite a fire near the weapon's resting place at sunset. Then from the fire, a ghost wolf would appear and cast judgment on the person who summoned it. If the person was worthy ? that is, if the person had the gift ? then the wolf would lead him or her to a lost temple where Demon Bane could be found.
<br><br>
I have no idea what to expect, so I will endeavor to prepare with ample supplies to heal myself and mend my armor. I leave for Skingrad tomorrow.

Father is Dead
<br><br>
I have been targeted for murder by some kind of cult, and my beloved father lies dead. Upon reaching Skingrad on my last stop before seeking the old campfire, I was approached by a distraught woman who wanted me to find her husband, a hunter who went missing north of Kvatch. The request was impossible to decline. The situation sounded dire, and I have a reputation to uphold of always accepting a contract if someone's life is at stake.
<br><br>
It was a trap. I was ambushed by two assassins. One of them carried a note describing my natural powers against Daedra. This is why they want me dead. How did they know? Are these the people my father warned me about? The note also spoke of others who carry the gift. I never knew. I would give much to meet another like me.
<br><br>
They also know that I am seeking Demon Bane, and fear the prospect of a Demonhunter discovering it.
<br><br>
I returned here immediately. I feared for my father's safety. He visits me here often and I had to assume the cultists knew of this place. My fears have been realized. They came while I was gone. And now I sit here, weeping for the greatest man I have ever known.
<br><br>
But the time for weeping will soon pass. I will bury him behind the fort at sunset and leave for Skingrad in the dead of night to thwart any attempt to follow me. For him, and for me, I will find Demon Bane. I am a Demonhunter, and I will fulfill my destiny.
