Dear Aldonia,<br>
I hope this letter will find you well, my dear. I cannot wait to see your beautiful face once again. I can hardly contain my joy. Only yesterday, did I send notice to your father that I have met his requirements for your hand. I am confident that we will be together soon. I am so excited that I must write to you now, even if I cannot send it until I have heard back from your father.<br>
As your father required, I have purchased a home for us. Not just any house, but a beautiful countryside manor. In fact it is large enough that I can work at home and not bother you or our beautiful children, when we have them.<br>
I can hardly believe my fortune, unfortunately it rises from a sad event. One of my customers was bringing in a diamond to be examined for a setting. Immediately after they dropped off the diamond, they were attacked. The entire traveling party was killed on the road out of town. It was very sad to have this happen. They were regular customers and quite friendly. Not the uppity type I usually have to deal with.<br>
Unfortunately these customers had no children yet. In fact they had no relations of any kind. At least none that I am aware of or I would have sent diamond to their heirs. So when the Legion soldiers came and asked if they had kept their appointment, I simply said no, they never showed. Everyone thinks the diamond was stolen after the fight, no one knows I have it.<br>
I had no idea what I had. I never looked at it when they dropped it off. They just gave me the box and asked me to set it. As I said, they were regular customers, and I know their taste. I am sure they assumed I would set it something appropriate. After the soldiers left, I opened the box and could not believe my eyes. It was the Gorvette Diamond. Aldonia, we are wealthy beyond our dreams.<br>
I sold off the business in town and used the money to buy our new home. I kept the gems that were not sold yet to start my new business here. Unfortunately, I will need to do some work, since I cannot sell the diamond for years. But we will retire young enough to enjoy our children and grandchildren.<br>
I have told your father that I have purchased this home and have met his conditions. I am sure he will give me your hand forthwith and we can be together. As soon I receive his reply affirming our wedding plans, I will send this. I am enclosing some large rubies so you may travel here in style. Only the best for my beloved Aldonia.<br>

僕は愛する君がちゃんとこの手紙を見てくれることを願っている。今一度君の美しい顔を見ることが待ち切れない。喜びの感情を抑えることができそうに無い。つい昨日、君との婚約条件を満たすことができたと君のお父さんに知らせをよこしたばかりなんだ。もうじき君と一緒になれると信じているよ。君のお父さんから返事をもらうまで出せないけど、とても興奮しながら手紙を書いているよ。<br>
君のお父さんが要求してきたから僕達の家を買ったんだ。ただの家じゃないよ、美しい田園風景の広がる邸宅なんだ。そこだと僕は家で働くことができるし、子供たちができたら、子供たちが退屈しないくらいとても広い。<br>
ひどい出来事がきっかけになった自分の幸運を僕はまだ信じられそうにもない。僕のお客の一人が土台がないか見てくれってダイヤモンドを持ってきたんだ。彼がダイヤモンドを持ってきてすぐ、彼は襲撃されてしまったんだ。旅をしていた一団は、町を出た街道で殺されてしまった。そんな事件が起こってとても悲しかったよ。彼らは馴染みのお客でとても親しかったから。僕がいつも相手にしてるような高慢な人たちとは違う。<br>
残念なことにこのお客達には子供がいなかった。その上、つながりのある身内が誰一人いなかったんだ。少なくとも、僕が知っている限りは、どの相続人にもダイヤモンドを送っていなかった。それで、衛兵がやってきて、お客が何か約束を取り付けたか聞いてきたけど、僕はただ「いいえ」と答えたら、衛兵はもう姿を見せなくなったよ。みんなダイヤモンドが騒動の際に盗まれてしまったと思っているだろうけど、誰も僕がそれを持っていることを知らない。<br>
僕は僕が何を持っているか全くわからなかった。お客にそれを届けられたとき、僕はそれを見ようともしなかった。彼らはただ僕に箱を渡して、土台に取り付けるように頼んだんだ。僕にとって彼らは馴染みの客で、彼らがどんな趣味かも知っている。彼らは僕が適当な土台を見つけてくれると思ってくれていたんだろう。衛兵が去ってから僕は箱を開いて、自分の目を信じることができなかった。Gorvette Diamondだったんだ。Aldonia、僕らの夢を超えて裕福になれるよ。<br>
僕は自分の商売を人に売り渡して、僕たちの新しい家を買うお金に使ったんだ。僕はこれからの新しい商売を始めるためにここまでに売れなかった宝石を取っておいたんだ。残念なことにダイヤモンドが売れるまでの間、僕はしばらく仕事をしなければならないだろうね。でも、僕たちが自分達の子供たちと孫たちと余生を楽しめる十分に若いうちに退くつもりだよ。<br>
僕は家を購入して、君のお父さんに条件を満たしたと伝えた。僕は君のお父さんがきっと協力してくれると信じているし、僕たちが一緒になることができると信じている。僕たちが結婚を考えてることに対するお父さんの返事を待って、僕はこの手紙を送ろう。君がおめかしをしてここに駆けつけるかもしれないから、大きなルビーをいくつか添えておくよ。最愛のAldoniaのために最高のものを添えて。<br>
