Notes on the Sword of Jedd Eye
There can be no doubt that a notorious pirate called Jedd Eye actually existed. The stories of his depravity and his depredations are far too widespread for him to be entirely mythical. It is also clear from the various stories that he did have a sword of some power. The rumours of the weapon's imperviousness to magic and the implication that it could absorb the life of the wielder have no concrete evidence to support them.
As to the end of Jedd Eye's life it is all pure conjecture. It is not unreasonable that the infirmities of old age drove the man to give up his life at sea but there is no reason to believe that was in Cyrodiil. The jails have no record of the name Jedd Eye or his aliases. It is true that the wreck of the Jean-Luc Picard can be found off the coast north of Anvil but the author has no evidence to claim that had ever been Jedd Eye's ship. It was a convenient wreck on which to peg his tale.
Cyrodiil is an unlikely choice on the face of it and its caves and dungeons have been explored by thousands over the years. No special 'sword of Jedd Eye' has ever been found. But this equally begs the question of why the author states Cyrodiil with such confidence. The tale would not gain or lose by not having the place so precisely identified. Did the author have secret knowledge? With the author as dead as Jedd Eye it is not something one can establish any more.
A number of possibilities could account for the sword being in Cyrodiil yet its whereabouts unknown.
1) The sword may be invisible
2) The hermitage is unlike anything the adventurers would look into
3) The hermitage is too well concealed to be discovered
4) The sword has been discovered and moved to a location where adventurers would not look.
Possibility 1 is unlikely. When Jedd Eye used it, it flashed bright as a light, as those few who escaped it agreed. If it was immune to magic it is unlikely that it was subsequently enchanted. Whilst the idea remains just about believable I really think it is unlikely to be the answer.
I am equally unhappy with possibilities 2 and 3. I have spoken to many adventurers since I became interested in the sword. They are, almost without exception, intrepid and ingenious. They all talk about pull chains, pressure plates, concealed buttons and levers, illusory walls, oddly located buttons and walls that might or might not become gates depending whether another such 'gate' is open. They have told me of Melisande's alchemy room, the Hall of Epochs, the caves beneath Hackdirt, the secret tunnels of castles Anvil, Bravil, Leyawiin and Skingrad. They have traversed the length and breadth of the sewers and visited more basements and cellars than I care to imagine. They have even climbed towers to see what has been left on the roof. No. Our adventurers are too canny to have been fooled.
I am convinced the sword has been found and taken into a private house. Here perhaps it is at risk of being pilfered by burglars but not by the majority of true adventurers.
I have spent much of my time over the last ten years working my way through these private houses. It is a slow process waiting until I can get in unnoticed and having time enough to explore without pressure. In this I have not excluded lighthouses, guard towers, empty property, warehouses and stores. I have not yet found it.
What remains?
There are two groups of places I have yet to investigate. The inner rooms of the seven castles of Cyrodiil have so far proved too difficult. I know they will not be in any of the secret places but the ordinary private rooms are too well patrolled for me to risk discovery. Then there are the three manors around the Talos Plaza.
10 such difficult locations is a daunting prospect given that the sword may not be in Cyrodiil at all. But I will take them logically. Surely with the infamy of the sword so well known the only people who would keep its existence a secret would be collectors? This narrows the search to two addresses. Umbacano's manor and Castle Bruma. Umbacano and Countess Carvain are noted for their ruthlessness when it comes to collecting. If it is not in either of these I shall complete the investigation of the other eight possibilities. If at the end of it all, no sword appears, I will discount the suggestion that it was ever in Cyrodiil. I shall try the manor first.

所在不明としてもなお、その剣がCyrodiilに存在するということを説明する多くの可能性はある。
1)__剣は見えないのかもしれない
2)__世捨て人の棲家は冒険家の探索した何処とも違う所にある
3)__世捨て人の棲家は極めて上手く隠されていて発見できない
4)__剣は既に見つかっていて冒険家に知られない場所に移された
可能性の1)はありそうもない。Jedd Eyeがそれを使ったとき明かりのようにピカッと光り輝いたと、剣難から逃れた数少ない者たちが同意している。もし剣が魔法を無効化するものなら、その後もずっとエンチャントしていることはありそうもないだろう。概ね信じられているこの考え方のある限り、本当にありそうもない答えだと思う。
同じく2)3)も可能性として気に入らない。私は剣に興味を持った時から、多くの冒険家と話をした。彼らはほとんど例外なく、恐れ知らずで巧妙だ。彼らは皆、鎖を引くこと、プレートや隠されたボタンやレバー、錯覚の壁、奇妙な場所のボタンを押すことによって、壁に別の『Gate』が開いたり開かなかったりすることについて話した。MelisandeのAlchemy RoomやHallof Epochs、Hackdirtの地下のCave、Castles Anvil,Bravil,Leyawiin,Skingradの秘密のトンネルについて私に話した。下水道の隅から隅まで横断し、私の想像以上に多くの地下室や穴蔵を訪れた。屋根の上に残されたものがないか見るために塔に登ることさえもしたのだ。違うな。我らが冒険家は騙されるにはあまりにも抜け目がない。

残りはどこか？
私がまだ調査していない場所は2つのグループに分かれる。まずCyrodiilにある7つの城内だが、これは今のところあまりにも難しいと分かった。それはいかなる秘密の場所でもないということは分かっているのだが、その普通の私室は私が発見の危険を冒すにはあまりにもよくパトロールされているのだ。そしてもう一つはTalos Plazaにある3つの大邸宅だ。
剣が全くCyrodiilの他の場所にないとすれば、これら10の場所が手強い候補地だ。だが論理的に考えよう。よく知られているように剣の悪評が確かなものなのに、その存在を秘密にしておくだろうコレクターとはどういった人達だろうか？_これが探索を2つのアドレスに絞ることになる。Umbacano ManorとCastle Brumaだ。UmbacanoとCountess Arvainは蒐集のこととなると容赦無いことで有名だ。このいずれにもないのなら、私は他の8つの可能性の調査を終えるだろう。そしてこのすべての終りに剣が現れなければ、そもそもCyrodiilにあったという示唆を無視することとなろう。まずは邸宅から始めよう。
