A CAT fell in love with a handsome young man, and entreated the goddess Mara to change her into the form of a woman. Mara consented to her request and transformed her into a beautiful damsel, so that the youth saw her and loved her, and took her home as his bride. While the two were reclining in their chamber, Mara wishing to discover if the Cat in her change of shape had also altered her habits of life, let down a mouse in the middle of the room. The Cat, quite forgetting her present condition, started up from the couch and pursued the mouse, wishing to eat it. Mara was much disappointed and again caused her to return to her former shape.<br>

The Fox and the Leopard<br>

THE FOX and the Leopard disputed which was the more beautiful of the two. The Leopard exhibited one by one the various spots which decorated his skin. But the Fox, interrupting him, said, "And how much more beautiful than you am I, who am decorated, not in body, but in mind." <br>

The Fox and the Lion<br>

When first the Fox saw the Lion he was terribly frightened, and ran away and hid himself in the wood. Next time however he came near the King of Beasts he stopped at a safe distance and watched him pass by. The third time they came near one another the Fox went straight up to the Lion and passed the time of day with him, asking him how his family were, and when he should have the pleasure of seeing him again; then turning his tail, he parted from the Lion without much ceremony.<br>

Alessia and the Lion<br>
<br>
A slave named Alessia once escaped from her master and fled to the forest. As she was wandering about there she came upon a Lion lying down moaning and groaning. At first she turned to flee, but finding that the Lion did not pursue him, she turned back and went up to him. As she came near, the Lion put out his paw, which was all swollen and bleeding, and Alessia found that a huge thorn had got into it, and was causing all the pain. She pulled out the thorn and bound up the paw of the Lion, who was soon able to rise and lick the hand of Alessia like a dog. Then the Lion took Alessia to his cave, and every day used to bring her meat from which to live. But shortly afterwards both Alessia and the Lion were captured, and the slave was sentenced to be thrown to the Lion, after the latter had been kept without food for several days. The Ayleid Emperor and all his Court came to see the spectacle, and Alessia was led out into the middle of the arena. Soon the Lion was let loose from his den, and rushed bounding and roaring towards his victim. But as soon as he came near to Alessia he recognised his friend, and fawned upon him, and licked her hands like a friendly dog. The Emperor, surprised at this, summoned Alessia to him, who told him the whole story. Whereupon the slave was pardoned and freed, and the Lion let loose to his native forest.<br>

The Lion, the Bear, and the Fox<br>
<br>
A LION and a Bear seized a Kid at the same moment, and fought fiercely for its possession. When they had fearfully lacerated each other and were faint from the long combat, they lay down exhausted with fatigue. A Fox, who had gone round them at a distance several times, saw them both stretched on the ground with the Kid lying untouched in the middle. He ran in between them, and seizing the Kid scampered off as fast as he could. The Lion and the Bear saw him, but not being able to get up, said, "Woe be to us, that we should have fought and belabored ourselves only to serve the turn of a Fox." <br>

(It sometimes happens that one man has all the toil, and another all the profit.)<br>

The Lion, the Fox and the Beasts<br>

The Lion once gave out that he was sick unto death and summoned the animals to come and hear his last Will and Testament. So the Goat came to the Lion's cave, and stopped there listening for a long time. Then a Sheep went in, and before she came out a Calf came up to receive the last wishes of the Lord of the Beasts. But soon the Lion seemed to recover, and came to the mouth of his cave, and saw the Fox, who had been waiting outside for some time. "Why do you not come to pay your respects to me?" said the Lion to the Fox.<br>
"I beg your Majesty's pardon," said the Fox, "but I noticed the track of the animals that have already come to you; and while I see many hoof-marks going in, I see none coming out. Till the animals that have entered your cave come out again I prefer to remain in the open air."<br>

(It is easier to get into the enemy's toils than out again.<br>

狐が初めてライオンを見た時は、彼はひどく怯えて、走って逃げ出し森へと隠れました。しかし二度目に彼が百獣の王に出会った時には、彼は安全な距離に立ち止まり、通り過ぎる彼を眺めました。三度目に彼らが出会った時には、狐は真っ直ぐライオンに近付いて、彼と共に時を過ごし、彼の家族の事や、次はいつ謁見の喜びに与れるかをたずねました。それから彼は背を向けて、礼儀にかなう挨拶もほとんどせずにライオンの元を離れたのでした。<br>

Alessiaとライオン<br>

ある日の事、Alessiaという名の奴隷が主人の下から脱走し、森の中へと逃げ込みました。彼女が歩き回っていると、うなったりうめいたりしながら横たわるライオンに出会いました。彼女は最初は逃げようと背を向けましたが、ライオンが彼女を追いかけようとしないので、向き直って彼の元へと歩みました。彼女が近付くと、ライオンはすっかり腫れ上がって血の出ている手を差し出し、Alessiaはその手に大きなトゲが刺さっており、痛みの元になっている事に気付きました。彼女はトゲを引き抜いてライオンの手を縛り、そのライオンは間もなく立ち上がる事ができるようになって、犬のようにAlessiaの手を舐めました。それからライオンはAlessiaを彼の住む洞穴へと連れて行き、生き延びる為の肉を毎日彼女に持って来るようになりました。しかしそれから少しの後にAlessiaとライオンは捕らえられ、この奴隷には、何日も食事を与えずにおいたライオンの元へと投げ入れる判決が下されました。Ayleidの皇帝と彼の臣下はみんな見世物を見にやって来て、Alessiaがアリーナの中心へと連れ出されました。間もなくライオンが彼のねぐらから解放され、吠え立て飛び跳ねながら彼の獲物へと駆け寄りました。しかしAlessiaに近付くとすぐに、彼にはそれが彼の友と分かり、彼女にじゃれついて、人懐こい犬のように彼女の手を舐めました。皇帝もこれには驚き、Alessiaを呼び出して、彼女からこの話を聞きました。すぐにこの奴隷は許され解放され、そしてライオンも生まれの森へと帰されたのでした。<br>

ライオンと熊と狐<br>

ライオンと熊が同時に子ヤギに襲い掛かり、その所有権を巡って激しく争っていました。互いに深手を負わせ合う長い戦闘にどちらも意識が遠くなり、体力を使い果たして倒れ込みました。遠くを歩き回って彼らの様子を窺っていた狐は、両者ともが地面にのびており、その間に横たわる子ヤギが手つかずのままである事に気付きました。彼は2匹の間へと駆け込み、子ヤギを咥えて全速力で走り去りました。ライオンと熊はそれを見ていましたが、立ち上がる事ができず、こう言いました、『何という不幸、我々は狐に食事をやる為だけに長々と戦っていたというのか。』<br>

ライオンと狐と獣達<br>
<br>
ある時、ライオンが自らの死の病を公表し、遺言を聞きに来るよう動物達を呼び出しました。そうしてヤギがライオンの洞穴にやって来て、そこで長い間彼の話を聞き続け、次には羊が入って行き、そして彼女が帰るよりも先に、子牛が百獣の王の遺志を聞き届けに現れました。しかし程なくして、ライオンはすっかり具合も良くなった様子で、洞穴の入り口へとやって来て、
その外でじっと待っていたらしき狐を目にしました。『敬意を表して私の元へ来る事という事を何故しない？』ライオンが狐に問いました。<br>
『お許しください、陛下、』狐は答えました、『しかしあなたを訪ねて来ている動物達が通った跡に気が付いたのです、足跡はたくさんあっても、出て来た時のものはないようでした。先客の動物達が洞穴から出て来るまでは、私は外で待っていようかと。』<br>
