Breaking Apotheosis
by Marcus Kafadi, Crusader Knight from the Colovian West (Proweler)

ach Dragon Break can be connected to the apotheosis of a god.

There have been four Dragon Breaks in the History of Tamriel. These are the apotheoses of the Tribunal, the Maruhkati Dragon Break, the incident at Rimmen and the Warp of the West.

Rimmen and the West

The common connection between the incident at Rimmen and the Warp of west is the Numidium, the Brass Dwemer God. It has been used twice and it would be logical to assume that is has been powered up twice.

The effects of the second attempt are well-known. The effects of the first attempt are obscured. According to both R'leyt-harhr (1) and dro'Mhakij (2) the area around the Hall of Colossus has been damaged forever but this cannot directly be attributed to a Dragon.

It remains a mystery what exactly happened but as the Empire must have powered up the Anumidium, we can assume a Dragon Break took place. Perhaps its warp of time passed unnoticed because there was only a single party involved or perhaps it only fractured time in Rimmen.

The Numidium and Vivec

When Vivec became a god, he did so by using the original power source of the Numidium, the heart of Lorkhan. His apotheosis would have been much the same as that of the Numidium. The Dragon broke as noted in the Love Letter (3) and by the eruption of Red Mountain (4), but there was no warp of time. The Love letter explains this by claiming that Vivec stabilized Akatosh.

Vivec and the Maruhkati

Now it is established that the apotheosis of a god will break the time, we can conclude with certainty that the Maruhkati were trying to become gods. They caused a Dragon Break.

This is also the required act of violence Vivec desribes in his Sermons (10).

The timeless period of thousand and eight years that followed, is much like the Dawn Era, it is also named the Second or Middle Dawn. In the Dawn Era the Gods walked the earth and it would be logical to assume that the Maruhkati gods walked on a part of Mundus.

Unlike the gods from the Dawn Era the Maruhkati gods of the Middle dawn only walked Mundus in Cyrodiil. The Elder Corax notes that Cyrodiil became an egg (6), which is a universe of it own.

The other provinces were protected in a way. Mehra Nabisi mentions that the Daedra and the Tribunal protected the Dunmer against the madness of the Selective (5).

Notes

I'm at a loss as to why the Dawn Era ended. Perhaps the Khajiit put things back together.

I do not agree with the idea that the Maruhkati are the Aedra. They created a new pantheon much like the Tribunal did but did not replace the Aedra.

The King of Worms hints at another Dragon Break (8). The apotheosis of the High King of Alinor, Auri-El King of the Altmer, Akatosh!(9) As this happened during the convention, it would be the apotheosis of all the gods.

Interesting is that the spiritual anguish experienced during the Middle Dawn is similar to what is described as the fracturing of the divine at the end of the Dawn Era. The absence of the full presence of the divine.

   1. R'leyt-harhr, Khajiit, Tender to the Mane:

"We'll give you credit: you broke Alkosh something fierce, and that's not easy. Just don't think you solved what you accomplished by it, or can ever solve it. You did it again with Big Walker, not once, but twice! Once at Rimmen, which we'll never learn to live with. The second time it was in Daggerfall, or was it Sentinel, or was it Wayrest, or was it in all three places at once?"

   2. dro'Mhakij, "Prophet of Rajhin," a Khajiit sugar addict outside of Yul's shop:

"Jodenjone! Don' let Marshee lie to you about Big Walker. The Blades took It from here, sure, but they din' take It back to Cyrodiil and rebuild the thing. Talos, he "annexed" a swath of our bounty-land in Ana'quinal and cleared the Khajiiti out by force. There's where he built the Hall of Colossus?a mighty name for a secret testing warehouse?and that's where Big Walker was born. And that's why that part of our Elsweyr is still poisoned glow-rock, where no cats go. Ach, for the lunacy of you Wayward Folk!"

   3. Loveletter From the Fifth Era

The C0DA broke when Twice Vehk appeared again from Aether, but they captured enough of Him to render the words stable again. In this passage, He describes the goal of the Lunar God, who some of you still ascribe the name "Lorkhan". When stabilized, the words become proof:
"All creation is subgradient. First was Void, which became split by AE. Anu and Padomay came next and with their first brush came the Aurbis."

   4. Vehk's Book of Hours, concerning Dragon Break

"...Of special note is the Blue Star, which the Alesstics call 'Mnemoli', that runs through this part of the Aurbis every untime. The psijiics hold it in much reverence, and many of their folk make pilgrimages to Veloth when it appears because a mountain there catches fire at its passing. This mountain is reputed to be one of the last refuges of the Dwemer before they departed from this world...

   5. Mehra Nabisi, Dunmer, Triune Mistress of the New Temple:

"Accounts of the Middle Dawn are the province of the Empire of Men, and proof of the deceit that call themselves the Aedra. Eight stars fell on Tamriel, one for each iniquity that Lorkhan made clear to the world. Veloth read these signs, and he told Boethiah, who confirmed them, and he told Mephala, who made wards against them, and he told Azura, who sent ALMSIVI to steer the True Folk clear of harm. Even the Four Corners of the House of Troubles rose to protect the periphery of your madness. We watched our borders and saw them shift like snakes, and saw you run around in it like the spirits of old, devoid of math, without your if-thens, succumbing to the Ever Now like slaves of the slim folly, stasis. Do not ask us where we were when the Dragon Broke, for, of all the world, only we truly know, and we might just show you how to break it again."

   6. Corax, Cyrodiil, Elder Council:

"No one understands what happened when the Selectives danced on that tower. It would be easy to dismiss the whole matter as nonsense were it not for the Amulet of Kings. Even the Elder Scrolls do not mention it -- let me correct myself, the Elder Scrolls cannot mention it. When the Moth priests attune the Scrolls to the timeless time their glyphs always disappear. The Amulet of Kings, however, with its oversoul of emperors, can speak of it at length. According to Hestra, Cyrodiil became an Empire across the stars. According to Shor-El, Cyrodiil became an egg. Most say something in a language they can only speak sideways. The Council has collected texts and accounts from all of its provinces, and they only offer stories that never coincide, save on one point: all the folk of Tamriel during the Middle Dawn, in whatever 'when' they were caught in, tracked the fall of the eight stars. And that is how they counted their days."

   7. Mannimarco, God of Worms, the Necromancers:

"The Three Thieves of Morrowind could tell you where they were. So could the High King of Alinor, who was the one who broke it in the first place. There are others on this earth that could, too: Ysmir, Pelinal, Arnand the Fox or should I say Arctus? The Last Dwarf would talk, if they would let him. As for myself, I was here and there and here again, like the rest of the mortals during the Dragon Break. How do you think I learned my mystery? The Maruhkati Selectives showed us all the glories of the Dawn so that we might learn, simply: as above, so below."

   8. Auri-El (King of the Aldmer)

The Elven Akatosh is Auri-El. Auri-El is the soul of Anui-El, who, in turn, is the soul of Anu the Everything. He is the chief of most Aldmeri pantheons. Most Altmeri and Bosmeri claim direct descent from Auri-El. In his only known moment of weakness, he agreed to take his part in the creation of the mortal plane, that act which forever sundered the Elves from the spirit worlds of eternity. To make up for it, Auri-El led the original Aldmer against the armies of Lorkhan in mythic times, vanquishing that tyrant and establishing the first kingdoms of the Altmer, Altmora and Old Ehlnofey. He then ascended to heaven in full observance of his followers so that they might learn the steps needed to escape the mortal plane.

   9. Sermon Six

Six are the formulas to heaven by violence, one that you have learned by studying these words.
